Approaching vocal knowledge: Be professional, not the opposite

In the past 2 years, many Facebook fanpages which share in-depth vocal knowledge have attracted a lot of attention from young people. However, one-way reception is fraught with dangers, especially when it is already controversial in the knowledge transmittal style of these sites.

By comparing many versions of a song - as sung by different singers - these "academic" fanpages will comment on the singers' voices using vocal terminology and techniques. The famous names mentioned include Huong Tram, Ha Anh Tuan, Erik, Chi Pu, and others. This process provides viewers with a massive and new amount of musical knowledge, along with that is the "satisfaction" when approaching excerpts performed by veteran vocalists.

Admittedly, these information sites play a huge role in bringing the concept of "professional music" closer to young audiences, especially in the social networks era. In fact, the meritorious vocalists of Vietnam such as Nguyen Thao, Dao To Loan, Dong Hung, Bui Lan Huong, and others have come closer to the public. In addition, these fanpages also have many intensive articles providing fresh and scholarly insights into world legends such as Maria Callas - the assoluta soprano, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross,...; or the Vocal Trinity of modern music.

Yet, the way these pages convey information is gradually becoming a double-edged sword. More and more audiences are using these advanced knowledge and assessment styles to flatter, refute, or even condone some opposing point of view, which triggers fierce arguments in the community. So then, will perfect music still bring about sublimation emotions, or just remind the audience to tear each other apart based on the difference in level between many artists?

On the audience side, according to NapoleonCat's statistics, up to 65.6% of Facebook users are in the 13-34 age group. This is the main audience group of vocal fanpages since they want to find free sources of knowledge. Besides, they are also the most vulnerable to social media information.

Faced with a large amount of knowledge and new perspectives, young people - after going through their overwhelmed instant - will tend to focus all their time on gathering information on a single source. Therefore, the risk of children becoming "frogs in the well" is inevitable.

Moreover, the long-term exposure of children to the subjective views of fanpage's admins can also form the phenomenon of gaslighting - a form of using distorted information that makes others worry and doubt their judgment. Even in other age groups, when there is a sharper mindset in selecting knowledge, their personality is still more likely to be affected.

On the artist's side, comparing unique individuals in artistic activities is extremely lame. These fanpages have repeatedly criticized and given many famous singers harsh nicknames. In retrospect, this was purely cyberbullying. Right or wrong, they are still humans and need to be evaluated objectively.

Not only the singers who are judged to have poor talent, the vocalists who are praised are also not immune from the consequences of this comparison. Standing among countless beautiful words, the artist is in complete danger of sinking into complacency.

To overcome and avoid these negative effects, it is first necessary to carefully consider the communication form of art knowledge fanpages. When it comes to beauty, it is crucial to remember that there are no absolutes.

Although the action on the page is motivated by a good intention, going about it in the incorrect way might have unintended repercussions. Moreover, it is necessary to be careful in using words on social networks, especially with large fan pages that have audiences of all ages.

Besides, this is still an old story about users' sanity when accessing information on social networks. The audience should equip themselves with a solid foundation of knowledge so that they can proceed to distill the information that is right for them. The abuse and imposition of knowledge - which we all know is endless - can also create barriers to learning and personal growth.

As an artist, getting the audience's support is a great thing, but that does not mean you are already perfect. On the other hand, judgment - whether good or bad - also reminds us of our own shortcomings. Wherever you are, keeping improving yourself is the most important thing to do.

The diversity of savvy is always able to tempt individuals who are on the path of self-development. Therefore, be a smart person when selecting information received and appropriately applying it to life.
