Anthony Tran became the youngest mayor in the history of Maribyrnong, Victoria, Australia at the age of 22. Before that, he worked 12 months as deputy mayor.

“I hope to inspire other young people, especially those from diverse backgrounds, to move forward and make a place for themselves, whether in sports, entertainment or politics”, Tran said in his inauguration speech in English and Vietnamese on November 9, according to the Maribyrnong City Council website.

As the son of Vietnamese parents who immigrated to Australia, Anthony Tran thanks the community forebears who have placed their trust in the next generation. “Without the guidance, support, and shoulders of giants for us to step on, we would not be here today", Tran said.

This is Tran's first term on the Maribyrnong City Council. Before being elected mayor, he served as the deputy mayor of Maribyrnong from November 2020 to November 2021.

The new mayor hopes he can improve local infrastructure, promote community safety and ensure everyone has access to mental health support. Recently, Tran has focused on youth empowerment, promoting multicultural communities, and supporting local businesses impacted by COVID-19.

According to data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2016, Maribyrnong city has more than 12,000 people, of which people of Vietnamese origin account for more than 10%.
